How to train a dog?

Joseph Lyttleton, November 24, 2023

Dog training is a long process. There are always days when training with the dog just doesn’t work. Before you feel disgusted, we have 7 promising tips for you to ensure that the exercises are firmly in place best dog trainer.

Dog training should not only be successful, but it should also be fun for the dogs and the owners. With these 7 tips for daily training you can do both!

  1. Finish when you are at your best
Is everything going like clockwork, the dog is excited and you are cheering up inside? Next, set a time goal. You should not challenge your four-legged companion for more than 15 minutes at a time, even if he does not show any fatigue. Otherwise, you risk a sudden drop in performance or unhealthy heating. End the workout with something positive , like a play drive or a cuddle session.
  2. The wrong ambition
Learning and internalizing something new takes time. If your dog has understood something and quickly follows the command, don’t take another step. Let him and you enjoy what he has learned. Some routine exercises you already master are better. Then repeat your lesson with him and be happy if he still remembers it.
  3. Getting back to normal is usually good
Your dog is distracted, restless, is he distracted by everything around him? And do you notice that he doesn’t really listen when you ask him to do something complicated or new? So it’s best to take a short break from training (maybe you just need to relax) before starting again, but this time with exercises that give you a sense of accomplishment.
  4. It is not always a pleasure
Training with a hungry dog is just as bad as training with one that has had a full stomach. A large meal should be stored in bags for at least two hours. You should have fasted a maximum of six hours beforehand so that you’re not just thinking about the treats you’re carrying with you. You should not continue giving this after each exercise completed.

Take turns, because there are other possibilities for positive reinforcement too: sometimes there’s verbal praise, sometimes a short hit, sometimes a toy you can chase, catch and retrieve, and always something tasty in between. This way you prevent the dog from claiming the reward from him (not confirmation from him) at some point.

  1. Never from zero to one hundred
We humans live by the clock. When there is a lesson, we start on time. The dog works differently. First he wants to smell , orient himself and, above all, bleed his muscles and clear his head. You offer him the best prerequisites for this if you run a few hundred meters with him before the start of your training, let him be petted so he can concentrate on yourself. This increases his desire for “more,” even if the more is exercise.
  2. It is better to be motivated twice
Are you really not in the mood for training and exercises? Then leave it. His bad mood will automatically be transmitted to the dog, who will correctly interpret his facial expressions and body language. He will also be more impatient if he only works with the dog out of a sense of duty. The same thing happens when you feel uncomfortable, by the way. Exercises only work if both you and the dog are motivated.
  3. Variety in training
Add variety to “sit,” “down,” “stay,” and “here” exercises, especially with monotonous obedience exercises. Have the dog go from running to “sit”, then back to “stand” or “sit”, let him go from “sit” to “sit”, from running fast to calmly yelling “at your feet”, which challenges. mentally and prevents him from doing the 08/15 training in an increasingly boring and frivolous way. You can reverse his usual routine. Take turns!
