The Bronze Age Is Back in Style For Handmade Jewelry

Joseph Lyttleton, September 23, 2022September 23, 2022

Bronze is actually composed of a copper and tin alloy. The combining of the copper metal and tin results in a much stronger metal allow and has a much higher melting point. The melting point of Bronze is 1981 degrees Fahrenheit. Bronze does have a yellowish color and when highly polished it resembles gold in appearance at times. As a higher percentage of copper is added to the alloy the malleability increases and the color becomes deeper. Bronze with about 90% copper content is often referred to as jewelers bronze, red bronze. This alloy is popular for metal craftsmen and jewelry makers due to its deep and rich coloration. Bronze jewelry and brass jewelry are always popular for their natural beauty and affordability. Some of the finest examples of noted artwork have resulted from the process of bronze jewelry casting, which is virtually the same technique used in casting silver jewelry.

Bronze was being made as early as 3000 BC and this third phase of man’s material development is referred to as the Bronze Age. By medieval times bronze was quite popular and different proportions were being alloyed for a variety of uses. Not only was this metal stronger and tougher than copper, it could be more easily melted and cast, and in addition was less susceptible to corrosion when exposed to the elements. Using different proportions of copper and tin several different alloys were made with varying properties. Bell metal was one alloy of 15% to 25% tin used to make bells because of the desired tone produced when struck. Statuary bronze with as little as 10% tin was used for statues and architectural endeavors. In tool and weapons making, a small amount of zinc was added to increase overall strength. Other components which were commonly added to the alloy include phosphor and manganese depending upon the specific nature of the application.
